Freeware: OpenCanvas 1.1

Description

This is a very popular freeware, so I'm not sure I need to introduce it...

It is OpenCanvas, version 1.1 b72. This is the last free version of OpenCanvas before it became quite like Photoshop.

OpenCanvas has very good tablet support, like most other Japanese programs. The tablet pressure curve is adjustable. Layer support is just OK, as there are only multiply, subtract, and add modes, and pixels cannot be moved individually inside a layer. There is no masking support. Tools consist of a flat-color pencil/pen, smooth watercolor, blurring tool, and eraser.

What makes OpenCanvas stand out from other programs, aside from the color behavior adjustability of the watercolor brush, is networkability. It is possible for two or more people on different computers to draw on the same OpenCanvas, at the same time. A chat window accompanies the drawing so that the correspondents may talk to each other as they draw. It makes for great collaboration work, or a way to have fun.

One of the users must host the data. This is done simply enough by supplying one's IP address, server name, and if applicable, a password (so that not just anyone can join). Some DSL routers configured to block all incoming internet traffic (as opposed to requests made by the user) must use the firewall-based utility Hamachi in order to create a secure virtual network, through which sessions can be easily hosted.

Additionally, there is a dedicated project to OpenCanvas networking called WarPaint, please give it a look here: [link] (This is basically an internet client for OpenCanvas. Two users can log into the server and then carry out an OpenCanvas session from there. A copy of OpenCanvas 1.1 is included in the download. Helpful if setting up a network session becomes too troublesome. The site also says the connection is more secure than a standard OpenCanvas connection between two remote users.)
